hula-hope:

My grandpa has Alzheimer’s so he has no idea who my grandma is but everyday for the last three or four months he brings her in flowers from their garden and asks her to run away with him and be his wife and everyday she says she already is and everyday the smile my grandpa gets on his face is the most beautiful heartfelt thing I have ever seen.

I don’t understand. Where’s the harm?
People are desperate and in danger, so they leave their homes and come to a different place. For whatever reason, they wind up on boats attempting to get to Australia, where they believe, with increasing inaccuracy, that they will be better off.
Now we’re at the point where people are dying. They are drowning and their bodies are being left in the sea because we won’t help them.

Why is this happening? I don’t understand.

Where is the harm in helping these desperate people reach safety? Nobody’s talking about not giving them background checks if we can. Nobody’s suggesting 100% open borders, no paperwork, just let everyone in.

But why are we determined not to let them in to the point they die? Why are we shifting them into horrible camps in horrible places? Where is the benefit to that?

If we don’t want them to die, as we all claim, why aren’t we just rescuing the boats and bringing them to the mainland where they can be safe? Why aren’t we just helping them? I’m not talking about giving them credit cards and a Lexus, but why can’t we just bring them somewhere safe and then consider if we have the resources to keep them here? Maybe we don’t, and that is a concern. I for one don’t care who comes here. But even if we accepted the idea that not every single person can stay, why can’t we keep people safe until we decide?

Where is the harm? Who is hurt by rescuing boats if they need rescuing, keeping their passengers safe, looking after them and treating them like people and not criminals.

I don’t understand why we can’t do that? What is wrong with us that means we can’t do that, or that it doesn’t even occur to us?

Where is the harm? Who gets hurt? Why can’t we do that?

I don’t understand why we have to be like this.
